~ Keep appointments for your adjustments. Missing scheduled adjustments will slow and disrupt the healing process

~ Maintain your ideal weight

~ Think before you lift. Keep item close to your body and lift with the legs, not the back

~ Avoid twisting and lifting at the same time. Remember to keep feet, knees and torso pointed in the same direction

~ Move your car seat as close to the steering wheel as is comfortable

~ If you spend most of your work day sitting down, shift your position frequently. Get up and walk around to improve circulation every hour

~ For typing or computer work, use document holders to keep papers in an upright position. Keep your monitor at eye level

~ Avoid crossing your legs when seated

~ Don't sleep on your stomach. Start out sleeping on your side with head and spine aligned. Place a pillow between your knees

~ Improve your flexibility. Do gentle stretches throughout the day

~ Practice deep breathing. This technique will help relieve stress

~ Walk everyday at a brisk pace to reduce stress

~ Realize that disc injuries are cumulative. Picking up a pencil can be dangerous if you have been using bad body mechanics

~ Wear flat or low-heeled shoes

~ When driving for a long time, make regular stops to walk and stretch

~ Always be aware of your posture. Sit up straight, don't slouch

~ Drink plenty of water to flush toxins out of your body

~ Realize that your back is a complex system of bones, discs, muscles and nerves. Do what you can to protect all of these elements from over-use and injury
